What is Learning Streams?

“Every person exceeds our power of measurement.” - Charlotte Mason

Our  Philosophy

Learning Streams is an alternative education center that offers in-person and online classes, along with private tutoring, an array of specialists, and educational consulting. We provide a unique support system for parents looking for an alternative to traditional learning options or need to outsource part of their child's education.

At Learning Streams, students can attend one or several in-person drop-off classes, online classes, workshops, and events to work around their individual needs and schedule. Private tutoring can be scheduled to offer additional support either on-location or online.

Learning Streams is overseen by our founder and Executive Director, Adrianne Roberts, who along with her staff, have curated a program like no other! Educators and specialists, along with people that want to share their amazing skill sets, all work together to provide an exceptional educational experience for children ages 5 and up.

Compiling various curricula, learning styles, and methodologies along with a strong focus on project-based learning is the foundation for each class created. We collaborate extensively as a team to take a traditional school subject and turn it into a learning encounter that flows together seamlessly. Students learn the same material across various mediums, class options, and educators for a well rounded viewpoint and experience.

What is Creative Education?

“Creativity is as important as literacy” ― Ken Robinson

Creativity: noun

  • the state or quality of being creative
  • the ability to transcend traditional ideas, rules, patterns, relationships, or the like, and to create meaningful new ideas, forms, methods, interpretations, etc.; originality, progressiveness, or imagination
  • the process by which one utilizes creative ability

Education: noun

  • the act or process of imparting or acquiring general knowledge, developing the powers of reasoning and judgment, and generally of preparing oneself or others intellectually for mature life
  • the act or process of imparting or acquiring particular knowledge or skills, as for a profession
  • a degree, level, or kind of schooling
  • the result produced by instruction, training, or study

Creative Education

Creative education occurs when students are able to use their imagination along with critical thinking skills to create new and meaningful forms of ideas. This offers room where they can take risks, be independent, curious, and flexible. Instead of being taught to reiterate what was learned, students learn to develop their ability to find multiple solutions to a problem. Coming up with various out-of-the box solutions is known as divergent thinking and there is no one way of cultivating this skill.

Creative education, in the simplest form, is giving students the freedom to explore, be curious, and come up with new ways of problem solving during their learning journey. You do not need to be an artist to be creative!

What are the skills of the Future?

What a child digs for becomes his own possession,” - Charlotte Mason

Prepare for the Future

We want our students to be prepared for future educational and career opportunities. Our students have the advantage of having a wide variety of skills taught during both academic and non-academic classes in an engaging way that becomes second nature. This allows the learning curve to be greatly reduced, if not entirely eliminated.

Digital Badging to Document Your Childs Journey

For most homeschooling parents, we understand that letter grades have little to no value to our learners because oftentimes letter grades reflect a propensity for test taking, and not mastery of the material. We know that employers are looking for a more granular understanding of a candidate's mastery of specific skills these days.

Keeping this in mind we strive to instill a competency-based education rooted in open standards which allow us to create a shared universal set of skills that can be virtually shared with other organizations via learning badges. These badges serve as a running portfolio of skills and standards mastered and allow learners to understand and share their achievements across multiple platforms using common standards. Everything a person learns can be used to create a rich portrait of their educational journey. Our badging system allows children as young as 5 to document and celebrate their learning journey as they master skills and therefore inspire the child to be even more self motivated to keep advancing at their own pace and pursue the things they love.

Why does it Work?

One test of the correctness of educational procedure is the happiness of the child”

- Maria Montessori

When Adrianne began homeschooling her son for 6th grade, it was tough for him to move beyond the traditional grading system. He also hadn’t had much experience working on large scale projects. The first year was spent in an outdoor education environment and working on passion projects. Each semester was spent working on a particular subject and creating a portfolio book of his progress. Over time, the projects got bigger and much more interesting. He created an authentic scale model replica of a tank on the town green in New Milford, CT and put it on display in a case at the local library along with his other models, research, and photography. His senior project was building an electric guitar and recording an original song. This type of learning served him well through his college years and now as he embarks in his professional career. He became a lifelong learner that didn’t need just a letter grade on a report card to feel successful.

When Adrianne began to transition outside of the traditional curriculum box to bring inter-disciplinary, unique, custom classes to children at several co-ops and classes in the area, the results were outstanding! After seeing how much her students retained information, she discovered that multi-disciplinary and project-based learning are the best ways to achieve extraordinary results.

This approach inspires others to learn creatively and embrace each unique learning challenge with confidence! This environment paired with caring educators, leads to cheerful students and satisfied parents! We have received dozens of letters and emails from families over the years telling us how much our classes have helped their child(ren).

The world may see the beauty and gifts in our children but to reflect that back to them and help discover their purpose in the world is what Adrianne has done for my daughter.

Mom of an 11 year old

Fostering a love of learning, intrinsic motivation, curiosity to deep dive and follow rabbit holes, and self-direction are words rarely used to describe education and children these days. Adrianne and her faculty create sacred spaces that foster all of the above for children and the results are children who are eager and thirsty to learn. These children have a deep sense of what they are passionate about, how they learn best and are always thinking of the next thing they want to dive into and experience. This gift sets children up to be happy, successful adults and what more could we want as parents?

Mom of 6 and 12 year old

Ms. Adrianne is an inspiring, kind, generous, and creative person! I was lucky enough to have Adrianne Roberts as a teacher after I came out of public school. She brought the creative side back out of me that public school took out. Because of her, I have color in my life!
